Dry Reforming Catalysts
Many reforming technologies have been introduced in response to the increasing demand for syngas, including dry (carbon dioxide) reforming of methane, the more traditional steam methane reforming, and partial oxidation of methane. The dry reforming which sometime called carbon dioxide reforming involves the reaction of methane or heavier hydrocarbons present in natural gas with CO2 to yield a syngas mixture with H2/CO ratio of 1

Ni-based catalysts have a low cost und wide availability but are more prone to fast deactivation by coking, oxidation and poisoning. The carbon deposition originates mainly from the endothermic methane decomposition (CH4 → C + 2H2) and Boudouard reactions (2CO → CO2 + C) and may cause damage of reformers. In this regard, utilizing a magnesium oxide catalyst support may highly reduce the rate of coke deposition and hence prevent catalyst deactivation over time. Kharazmi produces two grades of dry reforming catalysts, a semi active grade with less nickel content as well as an active one which successfully loaded in an industrial scale reformer in Iran and exhibits promising performance over more than 4 years.
